John Shelton Reed is William Rand Kenan,Jr. Professor Emeritus of Sociology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has written or edited over a dozen books on the South. His articles and essays have appeared in professional and popular periodicals ranging from Science to Southern Living. He is the founding co-editor of Southern Cultures. This painting (the 2nd in a series that may continue) is inspired by his newest book, "Holy Smoke: The Big Book of North Carolina Barbecue." An autographed copy of the book is included.
