Past Exhibits: Hard Circus Road: The Odyssey of the North Carolina Symphony

Did you know that North Carolina was the first state to fund its own symphony? Or that the folks responsible for all this were from our very own town, Chapel Hill?

In this exhibit, you can learn the story of Lamar Stringfield, who started the North Carolina Symphony in 1932, and Benjamin and Maxine Swalin, who took the Symphony from its humble beginnings to its current state of quality and permanence.

The show features programs from early symphony concerts, photographs, and early press articles on the state's traveling musicians.
